Israel does not want to occupy Gaza, that is why it unilaterally withdrew in 2005 evacuating 8,000 Israelis, dismantling its military presence and handing over a relatively developed infrastructure including a network of modern greenhouses that had been used to cultivate flowers, fruits, and vegetables. These facilities had the potential to support Gaza’s economy and provide employment opportunities, but was completely destroyed by Hamas and in its place they built an underground terror network to keep their population impoverished while terrorizing Israeli's.
The lack of a governing authority in Gaza that is committed to renouncing violence and upholding peaceful coexistence makes it difficult to ensure long-term security for Israel without direct oversight or control.
Without a reliable partner who is genuinely interested in peace, withdrawing from Gaza entirely could create a power vacuum, potentially leading to further violence and instability. Occupation should be viewed as a temporary, protective measure—one that remains in place until there is assurance that Gaza's leadership will not endanger Israel, commit acts of terror or violate potential future peace agreements.
Any resolution must involve the establishment of a stable, non-violent governance structure in Gaza that accepts Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state with Jerusalem as it's capital and commits to peaceful relations. Until such a partner arises, an Israeli presence in Gaza is necessary to prevent further harm to civilians on both sides and foster conditions where a meaningful peace could eventually take root.
